The Maryland Pharmaceutical Society pays our respects to the memory of a woman whose life was full of love, and ended on February 15, 2018, when Ramona McCarthy-Hawkins (affectionately known as, “Ms. Ramona”) was called to join God in Heaven.

Ms. Ramona was born on July 31, 1928, in Columbus, Ohio, the fourth of five children born to Ethel Foree Smith and James O. Smith. Ms. Ramona developed her interest in pharmacy from an early age after seeing a grandfather, three of her mother's siblings, and an elder brother have successful careers in the business. Through her God-given intellect and determination, Ms. Ramona completed undergraduate, graduate, and fellowship training in pharmacy, chemistry, and biochemistry, at a time where such academic achievement was difficult to attain for African-Americans.

Ms. Ramona encountered and overcame a myriad of obstacles in navigating a distinguished 44-year career in federal government service, including sexism and racism. In adversity, Ms. Ramona saw opportunity, becoming the founding member of Federally Employed Women (FEW), an organization created out of a need to support professional women like herself in Federal Government. Ms. Ramona also fought against racism in the federal government through her involvement with Blacks in Government (BIG), which she joined as a founding member, and served as the first president. During her career, Ms. Ramona went on to hold various board positions and memberships in her dedication to mentor and promote equality and excellence in the profession.

Ms. Ramona found her calling as a leader through her service with the Maryland Pharmaceutical Society, the Maryland Pharmacist Association, the National Pharmaceutical Association, the NPhA Foundation, the National Council of Negro Women, Montgomery County Chapter of NAACP, Citizens Minority Relations Committee, Montgomery County School Board, the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy Alumni Association, and a number of other church and community organizations.

Ms. Ramona consistently embodied a philanthropic spirit in donating endowment funds to a number of pharmacy schools and colleges of pharmacy, including Howard University, Florida A&M University, Xavier University, Texas Southern University, Ohio State University, University of Toledo, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, as well as a $15,000 scholarship endowment with the NPhA Foundation. She also contributed funds to A Bridge to Academic Excellence Middle/High School Mentoring and Tutoring Program. Furthermore, Ms. Ramona shared her wisdom by providing mentorship and guidance to generations of students and professionals that followed her footsteps.

Ms. Ramona was an icon and inspiration in the profession of pharmacy. Her loving and gentle spirit will truly be missed. While her passing has left us deeply saddened, we take this moment to reflect upon and celebrate her glorious and fulfilled life in the service of God.

Please consider buying a t-shirt, which features the 2017 Top 200 drugs and the flag of Puerto Rico, or donating on our fundraising page:

https://www.customink.com/fundraising/snphaforuprsop

100% of the proceeds from your purchase will be donated to the UPR SOP to benefit student pharmacists affected by Hurricane Maria. The fundraiser will be open until November 1, 2017. Your t-shirt will ship directly to your home around November 14, 2017. SNPhA’s goal is to sell 100 t-shirts, so please pass this message along to your co-workers, preceptors, and pharmacy friends!

MPhS pharmacists and SNPhA pharmacy students from Howard University and the University of Maryland performed medication regimen reviews and counseled patients on proper use of their medications and compliance. We worked alongside a group of nurses, who provided blood pressure screenings, and education on breast health. The event was a great opportunity for community members to receive their blood pressure reading, and much needed health information.
Today is National Pharmacist Day!

Monday, Jan. 12, marks National Pharmacist Day 2015. What was once a profession solely meant to prepare and dispense prescription drugs is now a lot more intimate. Aside from giving patients advice on drugs, pharmacists are also deeply involved in the health care of patients, especially in poor communities, where going to a doctor’s office can be unaffordable. "The healthcare landscape in our nation is changing and pharmacists are no longer simply dispensing medication," says CVS Caremark’s President and CEO Larry Merlo. "Our pharmacists are also providing important health care services through innovative programs and services across our practice settings."

David Stewart Associates Gala Celebrates Mrs. Ramona McCarthy Hawkins

Source: University of Maryland School of Pharmacy

On April 10, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy hosted a special dinner to celebrate the members of the David Stewart Associates (DSA). Established in the 1980s, the DSA is named for David Steward, America's first professor of pharmacy and a founder of the Maryland School of Pharmacy. Members of this prestigious group recognize the importance of sustained, leadership giving to provide a solid base of private support and to ensure the School's continued prominence in the pharmacy profession. These individuals make an annual gift of $1,000 or more.

Before the evening concluded, Natalie D. Eddington, PhD, FAAPS, FCP, dean and professor of the School of Pharmacy, presented the Key to Pharmacy Hall, which is awarded annually to an individual who has significantly impacted the School through his or her advocacy efforts and who has demonstrated commitment to assisting the School of Pharmacy with advancing its mission to lead pharmacy education, scientific discovery, patient care, and community engagement in the state of Maryland and beyond.

This year’s recipient was our dearest, Ramona McCarthy Hawkins, BSPharm, RPh, former review chemist for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"As a female and an African-American, Mrs. Hawkins was faced with the realities of sexism and racism in the federal workforce. She took a lead role in the fight against inequality in the workplace, supporting professional women like herself, through advocacy and mentoring, to advance them to upper level policy and decision-making positions in government. We owe her a debt of gratitude, as the fruits of her leadership, advocacy, and mentorship are enjoyed by women and minorities to this day,” said Dean Eddington.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree and completing a two-year fellowship in biochemistry at the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, Hawkins moved to Baltimore in the mid-1950s to work for the National Institutes of Health as a research chemist. In the mid-1960s, she was recruited by the FDA. She held various board positions and memberships in national pharmacy organizations, including Federally Employed Women and Blacks in Government (BIG), where she mentored and promoted excellence in the profession of pharmacy.

Following her retirement in 1996, Hawkins was appointed as a commissioner on the Maryland Board of Pharmacy by former governor Parris Glendening, where she helped to set standards and policies in the practice of pharmacy. She is highly regarded by her peers as a pioneer in her field, and is a current DSA member, establishing a scholarship in the name of the Maryland Pharmaceutical Society along with four other members of this organization.

Congratulations, and thank you for all that you do, Mrs. Hawkins!

MPhS Class of 2014 Scholarship Winner

Congratulations, Nkem Nonyel!

Since entering pharmacy school, Nkem has spent years educating many in underserved communities in Maryland about diseases prevalent in those communities. She was instrumental in bringing keynote speakers to the 2013 SNPhA Black History Month Forum and Health Disparity Forum. She almost single-handedly organized and promoted these activities to her classmates so that they could learn about the implications and effects of health disparities on all citizens of the State of Maryland. Also, with Nkem’s leadership from 2010-12, SNPhA helped host a health fair at the Baltimore Lexington Market that served a large number of underrepresented patrons. At the health fair, students discussed hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, the “Power to End Stroke”, immunization, and poison control. In November and December 2012, Nkem participated in the Walgreens’ and SNPhA’s HIV/AIDS Community Outreach and the National Kidney Foundation KEEP screening events. Each event was geared towards educating underserved patients and providing minorities the opportunity to interact with minority pharmacists.

Nkem is concurrently completing a Master of Public Health degree (Global Health concentration) from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, Masters of Public Health Program. Following graduation, she intends to continue to impact the health of the underserved community through volunteering. Nkem is a highly motivated, passionate individual who goes above an beyond to serve the mission of SNPhA and MPhS. It is with great pride that we award her with the society's $1,000 scholarship!

Asthma Awareness Presentation

Thank you for those who were able to join us at Ruth's Chris in Baltimore last night, 4/18/12, for a presentation by Dr. Matthew Mintz entitled, "Asthma Awareness."

Asthma ranks among the most common chronic conditions in the United States. Despite having medications and other treatments that can keep most asthmatics under control, the American Lung Association estimated that in 2006, over 400,000 hospitalizations and 1.7 million emergency room visits were attributed to asthma.

Dr. Mintz gave us an informative presentation regarding the need for asthmatics to understand control and what we can do in collaborative practice to reduce uncontrolled asthma episodes. Thank you, Dr. Mintz, for your engaging presentation!

Special thanks to GlaxoSmithKline for sponsoring this event!
